Catalogue Description:

Introduces students to the domain of writing from a personal and professional perspective.  Emphasizes teacher as model writer for students in schools.  Develops successful written self-expression.  Develops the ability to write for publication.

Rationale:

Teachers of writing need to be writers themselves.  The course is designed to foster effective written communication through study of writing as a means of communication and immersion in the writing process in personal, instructional, and professional contexts.

Williams, J. M.  (2001).  Style:  Ten lessons in clarity and grace (7th ed.).  New York:  Longman.

Instructional Objectives:

1.     To introduce students to the historical and cultural legacies of writing;

 

2.      To direct students in the analysis of theories and models of written discourse and composition;

 

3.       To describe for students the structural content, the emotive nature, and the communicative genres       of creative writing and to direct them in the preparation of selected genres;

 

4.      To assist students in researching and drafting a review of the scholarly literature;

 

5.              To direct students in the process of revision, editing, and final preparation of manuscripts; and oblige students to demonstrate the writing process with the objective of sharing the written product.

 

Assessment and Grading:

 

                Each student is required to involve himself/herself in the following:

 

                Workbook Exercises                                               200 pts.

                Memoir                                                                100 pts.

          Folktale                                                               100 pts.

                Literature Review                                                  400 pts.

                Workshop Participation                                           200 pts.

 

                                                                          Total:      1000 pts.

 

                Course grades will be assigned on the following basis:

 

                100 – 93 %             =              A

                  92 – 86 %             =              B

                  85 – 75 %             =              C

                  74 – 65 %             =              D

                Less than 65%         =              F
