Defining the Writing Community

Defining the Writing Community

Jane Hansen (1987) described the concept of the writing community in the following manner:

The members of the writing community rejoice in each other’s

accomplishments.  We don’t withhold information from each other because we

fear someone else will do as well as we do.  We share and others share with us.

We want to learn, and through sharing we know what others know.  This notion

of everyone as a possessor of knowledge for everyone’s use differs from

previous systems, which insisted each student keep to herself and which also

established hierarchies of haves and have nots . . . the community, a collective of

diverse information, underlies the success of the writing.  (p. ?)

My hope is that we can create such a community in this class.
