Preparing Students for Online Learning

GSU WebCT Login Page The GSU WebCT login pages offers a variety of resources to help students prepare for online learning.  The resources are divided into sections that address the needs of (1) students who are just thinking about taking an online course, (2) students who have registered for their first online course, and (3) students who are experienced online learners and are looking to access other university or student services online.  All of the resources on the login page are available to students without requiring that they log into WebCT.

GSU Courses for New Online Learners Two courses are offered for students who are new to online learning.  Both of these use WebCT and, therefore, require a login to WebCT.  You can view these two courses by going to the WebCT login page and logging in using fsiguest as the user id and password.

  • WebCT Precourse: The WebCT Precourse is a free 'mini-course' offered to all students who enroll in an online course.  It is made available 2 weeks prior to the start of the trimester and introduces students to all of the basic WebCT tools in a simulated 'real course' environment.  The course is facilitated by Barbara Mandel so that students can receive support and answers to any questions they may have.
  • Introduction to Online Learning (ADDS 502) This is a 2-credit hour academic course that goes well beyond the introduction of WebCT tools and develops online learning skills such as using search strategies to find information on the Internet, selecting the best search engine for the task at hand, applying critical thinking skills to evaluate information on the Internet, using synchronous and asynchronous tools to work on collaborative projects in the online environment, and building effective online teams.

Preparing Students for Elearning A resource that provides thoughts on a variety of aspects of student preparation including the role of the teacher, the role of the student, the learning environment, role of learning styles, and the profile of the "ideal" elearning student.
