PERSONALITY THEORIES

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Personality Theories is a comprehensive survey course that examines the fundamental principles behind our most valued schools of psychological thought. The course, taught by Professor Terri P. Schwartz of Governor State University, covers five major trends in personality analysis:

  • Early analytical theories
  • Behaviorist approaches
  • Social and interpersonal theories
  • Academic techniques of personality study
  • Growth-oriented techniques of personality study

The course encourages students to relate theoretical concepts to their own lives, taking them beyond theory and challenging them with important questions, such as:

  • Why do people act the way they do?
  • How much of their behavior can they actually choose?
  • Will facts you learn about one person help you predict the actions of others?
  • What is the purpose of living?
  • What should you expect to get out of life?

Personality Theories examines the evolution of psychological theories, giving dimension to the science of human behavior in a way that makes sense to the modern reader.

Personality theories
OVERVIEW

As a survey course, Personality Theories offers a landscape view of modern psychology. The course helps students identify and inter-relate the contributions of each psychological theory by assigning it to one of five distinct categories:

  • Early analytical theories, as exemplified by Adler, Jung, and Freud
  • Behaviorist approaches advocated by Bandura, Dollard, and Skinner
  • Social and interpersonal theories advanced by Adler, Horney, Sullivan, and Fromm
  • Academic techniques of personality study used by Allport, Eysenck, Murray, and Kelly
  • Growth-oriented techniques of personality study typified by the theories of Laing, Maslow, and Rogers

Throughout the course, students are asked to incorporate their own observations of human behavior into the various theories. To help them rethink their attitudes and assumptions in original ways, the course emphasizes four key concepts in each of the theory categories:

  • The theory’s definition of "person"
  • Its definition of "personality"
  • The field of study used by practitioners – dreams, behavior, lab findings, etc.
  • The methodology used to collect and analyze data for the purpose of validating the theory
